Café-Restaurant, Papworth

GHA has achieved planning permission for a new Café-Restaurant in Papworth Everard, Cambridgeshire.

The site, six miles from Huntingdon, is located on the northern side of the Chequers Lane on the southern end of the recreation ground, which provides various sports facilities. The site is currently occupied by a vacant sports and social club known as 'The Conservatory'. The building has been vacant since 2018 and is in a poor state of repair.

The proposed building has been designed to enhance connections to the playing fields and sports facilities with glazed windows and bifold doors on the north elevation for the café / bar, opening onto an outdoor terrace and a first-floor terrace at the rear of the building.

The entrance to the building on the southwest corner of the building, is easily accessible from the car park, and provides a visible and legible feature with a double storey glazed section, projecting above the adjacent flat roof.

The elevations have been finished in cream / buff brick, and detailed with buff sandstone copings and a glass balustrade with stainless steel handrail. Doors and window frames have a dark grey anthracite finish, complimenting the light-coloured brickwork. The roof has been finished in standing seam zinc cladding.

The new building will provide users of the recreation ground with an attractive and modern space overlooking the playing fields, with the café restaurant on the ground floor opening onto an external terrace. Further seating has been incorporated on the first floor, with an elevated terrace situated at the rear of the building. The proposals will add an attractive new facility at the northern end of Papworth Everard, in an accessible location adjacent to the main commercial centre of the village.

The provision of a new café restaurant will enhance the use and function of the designated Green Space and will assist to attract new users to the recreation ground, supporting the teams that use the courts and playing pitches.
