Re-modelling, extension and refurbishment Huntingdon Road, Cambridge

This early C20 house was very tired and in need of modernising. We completely renewed the plumbing and electrical services, including the installation of an intelligent home control system, underfloor heating and grey water recycling.

The roof was stripped and renewed with matching clay tiles and all the windows were replaced with purpose-made hardwood in period style at the front of the property and powder-coated metal at the rear. The windows at the front were triple glazed to provide acoustic insulation from traffic on Huntingdon Road.

The external walls were insulated: externally with an insulated render system replacing the former pebble-dash, as well as internally, in order to significantly improve thermal performance.

Period features were removed prior to the internal insulation being fitted and then reinstated, in order to retain the character of the original fabric.

The building was extended at the rear in contemporary style to provide a light and spacious family room and kitchen with a master bedroom suite above. Glazed balustrading was installed, both to the balconies and to the external paved area, in order to maximise views of the attractive garden.
