Hills Road Energy-Efficient Apartments
A contemporary development of six energy-efficient apartments in central Cambridge, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern performance.
Located on Hills Road, one of Cambridge’s main residential routes, this new development by Graham Handley Architects replaces a tired post-war block with a carefully scaled building of six energy-efficient homes.
The design responds sensitively to its setting within the Cambridge Central Conservation Area, balancing traditional materials with contemporary detailing. The four-storey composition steps back from the street to respect neighbouring buildings while maximising natural light and views.
Two duplex apartments occupy the top floors, each with a private roof terrace overlooking Homerton College gardens. On the lower levels, four further two-bedroom apartments open onto balconies and courtyard gardens, creating a strong connection between inside and out.
Built to a high environmental standard, each home is gas-free and EPC A-rated, incorporating air-source heating, high insulation and whole-house ventilation. These measures provide excellent comfort and energy efficiency throughout the year.
The building’s material palette includes Flemish bond brickwork, Bath stone lintels and bespoke joinery by local specialists — details that help the architecture sit naturally within its historic context while showcasing craftsmanship and durability.
The result is a calm, refined piece of contemporary architecture that contributes positively to the character of Hills Road and the wider city.
